Catholic Charities has opened a new facility in Shiawassee County to better serve the community.

Catholic Charities has opened a new facility in Shiawassee County to better serve the community.

The organization, which helps people and families in Mid-Michigan, has a new home in downtown Owosso.

"Our lease was up and parking was a problem in downtown Flint," says Vicky Schultz, CEO of Catholic Charities.

Catholic Charities ran out of space at its previous location inside the St. Michael's Catholic School building in Flint.

The new facility, located at 1480 M-52 in Owosso not only provides more space, but also additional parking.

"We have handicapped patients and a lot of them are brought here through the bus system. So they'll be able to get off and come right in through the front door," says site coordinator, Cathy Sprague-Emmans.

Similar to the Flint facility, the new center will continue to offer a food pantry and community closet.

Catholic Charities also helps people who suffer from substance abuse and other problems. It also provides employment programs and other services.

"There are many hurdles in life we have to go through so we hope we can be that helping hand," said Schultz.
