I go red for...
I go red for the 1 in 3 women who develop heart disease. That is a staggering statistic, and a painful shot of reality.
I snore (not attractive), have high blood pressure, and have an unhealthy BMI. These are three key risk factors for heart disease. I don't want to go there.
My first experience with heart disease was when I was in 7th grade. My mother woke me up one Saturday morning to tell my my grandfather, whom we called "Big Louis", had a heart attack and died the night before.
At the time, Big Louis seemed old. He was my grandfather, after all. The truth is, he was only 59. His first heart attack happend when he was 41.
I posted this picture of him, cooing over me, when I was about a year old. I was wearing red.
I go red for women, but I also go red for Big Louis. He was fun, and could always make me laugh.
He also made the best fried chicken. Big Louis used to say, "If the Colonel had my recipe, he'd be a general."
When Big Louis had his heart attack, there was not nearly as much information available about how to avoid heart disease and prevent heart attack.
I go red because, maybe, my grandfather would have been with us much longer, if he had known better.
Heart disease is the number one killer of men and women. Going red, raising awareness will change that.
