Healthy Homes: the difference in filters

The difference in filters. (WEYI & WSMH)

Ok, I know I've got on you about changing your filters quite often but today were going to talk about two very different types of filters and which one may benefit your family better.

This first filter is one that you can pick up from your local hardware store. It needs to be changed once and month and costs just a couple dollars, but here's the biggest problem I have with these kinds of filters. you can see thru them. And if you can see thru them, then what you see, can get thru them.

On the other hand, here we have an air cleaning filter that you can see is about 5 times as thick. It's pleated and has a greater surface area then your normal filter in so much that you only need to change it once a year. I've taken the liberty of cutting this one apart to give you a very graphic example of how it works.

As you can see this filter isn't just the 16" size as the regular one, but by expanding the pleated sections, this actually spans to over thirty feet in length. You can't see thru it which means it captures pretty much everything you can see with your eyes, dust, dust mites, pollens, mold spores and pet dander. This 30 feet of pleated filter lasts for an entire year and only costs $30-$50 for twenty times the filtering capability.

So the next time you choose a filter for your furnace, choose wisely and do the most you can do to keep your family breathing clean air.
