FLINT, Mich. --The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality wants a federal judge to give Flint's Mayor Karen Weaver the duty and authority to sign a new 30-year water contract before an upcoming recall election.

According to court documents filed Friday, the MDEQ asked Judge David Lawson to authorize Weaver to execute the contract to buy water from the Great Lakes Water Authority without Flint City Council’s approval and ordered her to do so immediately.

According to the document, “MDEQ requests that the court expedite the briefing on this motion to require a response no later than the morning of Nov. 6, 2017, and decide the motion, if possible, no later than Nov. 7, 2017.”

November 7 is the same day that Weaver could potentially be unseated as mayor.
