13-year-old girl, missing for a year, found safe in Ohio
Flint Township Police Department says on Thursday, August 3 they were notified by the Toledo Police Department in Ohio, that they had located 13-year-old, Aireona Smith.
Police say Aireona Smith was reported as a runaway to the Flint Township Police Department on August 1, 2016, and had been missing since.
Police say they reached out to the public asked for help in locating her.
According to police, numerous tips were generated throughout the year by citizens, social media, missing persons groups, and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. All leads were investigated, but police were unsuccessful in locating her.
Police say on August 3, 2017, Aireona entered a public library in Toledo and a security guard stationed at the library recognized her from a missing person’s poster and called 9-1-1.
Police say the responding officers confirmed her identity and notified the Flint Township Police Department. According to police, Aireona was found in good health, and it appears she was voluntarily missing and not being held against her will.
Police say on Monday, August 7, 2017, Aireona was brought back to Flint. She will now receive assistance from Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
The Flint Township Police Department says they express sincere gratitude for the public’s help and support, "as well as NCMEC’s diligence in keeping the public informed."
