A two-year, $150,000 study to better understand problems with muck along beaches at the Bay City State Recreation Area along Saginaw Bay is getting started.

Jason Duvall, an environmental psychologist and independent researcher from the University of Michigan, tells The Bay City Times part of the effort aims to better map community opinions on beach muck issues. A survey is posted online.

Donna Kashian, a professor of ecology at Wayne State University and lead researcher for the project, says that the survey is part of a wide range of work scientists and economists will undertake. Researchers from Michigan State University also are involved.

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality is providing advisement and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources is lending support. Others also are involved.
