Elijah's dad, 39-year-old Aki Dillard and his mom, 30-year-old Mio Campbell are being charged for beating and burning the little boy. But more charges could come because Elijiah died from his injuries Saturday.
Aki Dillard and Mio Campbell, facing a judge for the first time since being charged with first degree child abuse after allegedly assaulting their 6-year-old son. Dillard is also charged with assault with intent to murder and torture. Police say the Elijiah was found unresponsive Thursday afternoon. His body covered with bruises and burns.
"Itâ??s very disturbing and very upsetting whenever you have a child that's a victim of this kind of crime," said Michigan State Police Lieutenant Brian Cole.
Saginaw County Prosecutor John McColgan says the charges are very likely to change and become more severe. The news of Dillardâ??s passing is concerning parents neighboring Dillardâ??s home on Ames Street.
"I have four children myself and thereâ??s no way I would lay hands on my children," said Saginaw resident Sally Babier.
However, the CAN Council says this is a growing trend in Mid-Michgan.
"Our children are suffering in a way that I havenâ??t seen in twenty years of this work," said CAN Council President Suzanne Greenberg.

The Saginaw County Prosecutor anticipates additional charges. Police say Dillard has a history of violent crime. The 39-year-old was convicted and sentenced for murder in Illinois before moving to Michigan in 2013.
