Alpha Esquires celebrate 16 years of mentoring and leadership

Drey Taylor will attend U of M-Flint.

A local group of mentors is helping young men become the next generation of leaders.

The Alpha Esquire Mentoring and Leadership program awarded $20,000 in scholarship money and computers to young men at an academic banquet ceremony this past Saturday.

The group has been mentoring for 16 years.

Each student involved in the program is going on to further their education---leaders call it a success.

â??We have to prepare these young men to represent us and hold down the future for us so it's exciting to see them move on and become successful,â?? says Sam Wells, director of the program.

â??Itâ??s not all about the violence, itâ??s not all about the negativity,â?? says Drey Taylor, a senior at Grand Blanc High School. â??A lot of young black males are doing positive things for our area,â?? he adds.

Drey is headed to the University of Michigan-Flint.

The Alpha Esquire program is run the by the Flint alumni chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
