Benton Harbor schools could get emergency manager

A review team says there's a financial mess in the Benton Harbor school district.

The team says a financial emergency exists, which means Governor Rick Snyder has 10 days to review the report and take some action. The district could get an emergency manager who would have broad authority to make changes.

The Benton Harbor district owed millions of dollars to vendors at the end of its 2013 budget year, including some bills that had been unpaid for months.

Local officials told the review team that they can't eliminate the district's deficit until 2028. The review team's conclusions were released Friday.
