DAVISON, Mich. (WEYI/WSMH) - It's a story that will make your skin crawl: an extremely rare and potentially dangerous spider was found in mid-Michigan recently.

Michigan State University says since 2011, five counties in Michigan were found to have brown recluse spiders.

Most of them were in Central Michigan: Lenawee, Hillsdale, Ingham and Washtenaw counties; Genesee has now been added to that list.

According to MSU Diagnostic Services, these spiders were found in Davison last week.

A woman found them in her detached garage.

Brown recluses are normally found in Southern states and are transported north through things like luggage, plants or wooden items.

They do bite and it can be serious, but most bites recorded have been minor.

The spiders tend to hide out in dark places like an attic, basement or garage.

All-N-One Pest Control in Flint says if you find a brown recluse, don't panic and call the Michigan Department of Agriculture or a pest control company.
