Buena Vista dissolution bill moves to Governor Snyder's desk

The Buena Vista school district is just steps away from shutting down for good.

The dissolution bill now waits for the governor's signature. Meantime, Saginaw County educators are preparing to transfer students as the clock ticks.

Just four school days remain for Buena Vista students. It might be the last time they walk through the halls.

â??Know that you're never abandoned, you must be ready for everything,â?? says Dr. Deborah Hunter-Harvill to one of her students.

The Michigan House of Representatives and Senate sent a dissolution bill to Governor Rick Snyderâ??s desk Thursday.

â??I have transitional meetings set up with neighboring school districts such as Saginaw city, Bridgeport and Carrolton and I will work with those superintendents,â?? says Hunter-Harvill, superintendent of Buena Vista schools.

Once the bill is signed, it's Dr. Richard Syreckâ??s job to find new schools for the displaced students.

â??There's nobody that's been pointed out as to---this district is where it's going,â?? says Syreck, superintendent of the Saginaw Intermediate School District. â??We are gathering information from the district's so we can make some decisions,â?? he adds.

Syreck isn't the only person gathering information on the dissolution. The Detroit chapter of The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People says the bill unfairly targets minority school districts.

â??We're keeping a close eye on it and in our view, it raises a lot of questions that we're trying to work through,â?? says Butch Hollowell, legal counsel for the Detroit chapter of the N.A.A.C.P.

Despite a possible challenge, education officials are moving forward.

â??We don't have a choice. Once the bill is signed, we have 21 days so we have to move forward as if all is clear,â?? says Syreck.

Meantime, Buena Vista educators are facing the reality, hoping for a smooth transition.

      â??Weâ??re not abandoning them,â?? says Hunter-Harvill. â??They'll be good,â?? she adds.

The superintendent's tell me they're working together to make sure these students have an easy adjustment. Buena Vista students are taking their finals this week. The kindergartners have their own moving up ceremony next Tuesday.
