Ex-President Jimmy Carter and Michigan Governor Rick Snyder are among the dignitaries scheduled to speak in Detroit at the annual convention of the Islamic Society of North America that opens Friday.
The Republican governor is expected to speak Friday afternoon during the opening session of the four-day conference at Cobo Center. The society is among America's leading Muslim groups.
The Democratic ex-president is set to speak Saturday afternoon about the need for religious communities to tackle discrimination and violence against women and girls worldwide.
Other scheduled speakers include Democratic U.S. Representative Keith Ellison of Minnesota, the first Muslim elected to Congress.
The Detroit area has one of the nation's largest Muslim populations.
The group's 51st annual convention is called "Generations Rise: Elevating Muslim American Culture."
