Community members take the Ice Bucket Challenge

A local group joined the Ice Bucket Challenge for a good cause.

Leaders at a local afterschool program said "yes" to a national challenge.

YouthQuest team leaders along with people nationwide have joined the Ice Bucket Challenge to help raise awareness of Lou Gehrig's Disease (ALS). The charitable cause offers participants two choices - Donate $100 to help fight ALS or dump a bucket of cold ice water over your head.

Youthquest did both.

"We do have a couple of staff members who have had family members that were affected by ALS, " said Brittany Miller, a YouthQuest site team leader. "So it did hit home for a couple of people."

Many participants were not only drenching themselves in ice water, they also donated money to support the cause.

"The staff will be coming together to make one large donation on behalf of the YouthQuest afterschool program," said Ashley Ruffin, another program team leader.

YouthQuest is a free afterschool program serving students in 18 area schools.
