Opinion Piece Author: Kris Russo, NBC25 Account Executive

The Verizon Wireless Samsung Odyssey is a great phone for someone that is taking the leap into a smart phone world.

The Verizon Wireless Samsung Odyssey is powered by a 1.5GHz dual-Core processor which is extremely fast and also helps with battery life. It does have 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal memory but it can also handle up to a 64GB microSD card for everything else that needs to be stored. The microSD card is sold separately.

Looking at the device, screen on top, the power/sleep button is right side of the phone, the volume toggle is on the upper left side and the lower left side is the spot for the microSD card. The charging port is in the center on the bottom. On the left side at the top is a 3.5mm headphone jack. The SIM card slot is on the top left side that needs a special tool to open it, which comes with the device, just make sure not to misplace it. The camera button can be found at the lower right hand side of the device. This is an awkward spot for it to sit because it is constantly being pushed whenever someone is holding the phone. It is a good thing that it doesnâ??t hang up on the call when it is hit accidentally.

The Verizon Wireless Samsung Odyssey has 8GB of internal storage; however, when it is formatted there will be about 6GB, give or take a little.

The Verizon Wireless Samsung Odyssey screen is a 4.82â?? 720p Super AMOLED screen. The phone is very nice and a great starter phone for anyone that is getting ready to take the plunge into the smart phone world.

The Verizon Wireless Samsung Odyssey camera is a 5 megapixels with a single LED flash. The front-facing camera is 1.2 MP and can be used for still pictures as well as video. An extra feature for the Windows Smartphone is the option to download different Lenses for the camera via the Windows Phone Store. There is a Smart Shoot, Panorama, and Cinema-graph Lenses just to name a few.

Smart-phone users have concluded by now that no matter the phone in use it will have to charge every day. However, with each new phone release the batteries seem to get better and last longer.

The Verizon Wireless Samsung Odyssey has a 2100mAh Li-Ion battery. The battery life will vary depending on how the phone is used. If it is running on Wifi it could last all day easily, however, if it runs on 4G all day it seemed to last about 8 hours before it needed to be charged.

Verizon Wireless Samsung Odyssey is running the latest version the Windows Phone OS. The Windows Phone OS offers features that cannot be found anywhere else. Some of the great features:

  1. Live Tile - A design that gives the latest News, Weather, Status Updates, or anything else that someone would need at a glance. There is an amazing feature to sync Facebook, Twitter, Outlook all to one location so everything can be all found in one place with just one click.

  2. Data Sense
â?? This is a great way to monitor the data usage through the month to make sure that there are no overages.

  3. Kidâ??s Corner - Allows kids to only use the apps/music/games that the parent sees fit.

  4. Xbox LIVE â?? Windows Phone OS are the only ones to have this feature built in and have one touch access from the home screen.

  5. Sky Drive
â?? Allows documents and pictures to be saved in one place and opened up via an app on the device in order to save the limited memory on the phone.

There are many more features to experience and utilize.

The Windows Phone Store features more than 120,000 apps to pick from with more that are added daily. In order to access the Internet/app store/Xbox Live feature a Microsoft email is required. Make sure that the email is the same one that is tied to the Xbox or that feature will not show up correctly.

Verizon Wireless Samsung Odyssey features Microsoft Internet Explorer 10 and has all the same features as the desk top version and also includes a pinch-zoom feature for web pages. This feature allows for zooming in and out as much as needed. There is a nice screen shot of bookmarked pages, and they can all be viewed in landscape or vertical configurations. That makes it easy to jump to the favorite pages easily.

The Verizon Wireless Samsung Odyssey is a nice little starter phone. It has a learning curve for someone who is a seasoned Droid or iPhone user. It takes a little bit of patience and time to get used to the changes but it is a strong, powerful phone with some great potential.
