Crime Stoppers opens new office in Flint to serve all of Genesee County

You've heard the public service announcements on the TV and radio â?? cash rewards for anonymous tips that help police solve crimes.

Now, Crime Stoppers is expanding to cover all of Genesee County.

Detroit-based Crime Stoppers of Michigan announced Tuesday it will open a new office in Flint to serve the county. Flint Area Crime Stoppers was forced to stop service because of a lack of funding.

When you call 1-800-SPEAK UP, you could get rewarded $2,500 for a tip leading to a homicide arrest and up to $1,000 for tips leading to arrests in other crimes.

Flint Police Chief James Tolbert is reassuring the public all tips are anonymous and the hotline is a safe and secure way to report crimes and tips.

â??When we constantly ask the public to give us tips, it's imperative that we have a process where they are assured that the tips will be taken, it will be totally anonymous and that we react to those tips,â?? Tolbert said.

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said the successful prosecution of several major crimes began with anonymous tips.

â??The citizens are the ones we try to protect, but the citizens are the ones who can play such a vital role in helping us bring criminals and perpetrators of violent crimes and invasive crimes to justice,â?? Leyton said.

Anyone can report a tip to the new Genesee County Crime Stoppers line at 1-800-SPEAK UP (1-800-773-2587). Officials say calls to the old number, 1-800-422-JAIL, will still be answered.
