DaVontrae Benton sentenced to over 31 years in prison

DaVontrae Benton awaits word on what his sentence will be after being convicted of killing six-year old Jonaries Holden.

DaVontrae Benton was sentenced to over 31 years in prison today for the killing of then six-year-old Jonaries Holden back in November of 2010.

Judge Archie Hayman from the 7th Circuit Court of Genesee County passed down the sentence on Thursday morning in front of a packed court room.

Benton was sentenced to 30 to 50 years in prison for second degree murder. He was given another two years for a felony firearm charge.

Investigators say Benton and Jonaries's father, Johnny Holden were arguing over a $60 drug debt when Benton shot into Holden's car. Jonaries, his twin brother and another child were in the back seat. Jonaries was shot and killed.

"Because of the lifestyle of two people an innocent life is gone."

Benton addressed the court before his sentencing and apologized for Jonaries' death.

"From one father to the next, I grieve with you everyday." said Benton.
