Detroit, Flint join Arab American Service Day

Detroit is hosting one of the largest projects affiliated with National Arab American Service Day. More than 400 volunteers are expected Saturday in Clark Park, where the to-do list includes installing an outdoor fitness center, painting and other maintenance. The group also will board up seven abandoned homes and do cleanup work in buildings in the surrounding neighborhood on the city's southwest side. Meanwhile, volunteers in Flint will work with youth at Whaley Children Center on activities including crafts, landscaping and sports. Overall, 2,000 volunteers are expected to participate or have participated in 20 projects in 10 states and the District of Columbia. Most are being held this weekend. The 10th annual service day is hosted by the Dearborn-based National Network of Arab Communities, a project of the nonprofit ACCESS.
