Detroit home broken into while young children left alone

Police say a 10-year-old boy who was left home alone with his 10-month-old sister fled with her to safety before dawn Thursday after someone broke into their Detroit house.

The boy dialed 911 and fled to a neighbor's home on the city's west side.

Neighbor Sheena Vance said she heard a knock on her door around 5:30 a.m. She opened the door to find police there with the boy with the baby.

"I think he was pretty heroic," Vance said.

No injuries were reported. The children were taken to a police precinct.

Police said the mother returned home at 9 a.m.

Next-door neighbor Marrieo Fox said the woman was frantic to find her children missing and the house torn up.

Police are investigating the mother's conduct.
