DNR to award $1M in aquatic habitat grants

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources plans to distribute $1 million to protect and restore habitat for fish and other aquatic wildlife.

The department said Monday that grants will be awarded to government agencies, Native American tribes, nonprofit groups and individuals on a competitive basis. Each project could get up to $25,000.

Fisheries Division program manager Gary Whelan says the initiative is designed to boost wildlife populations and public involvement in watershed protection efforts.

Projects can focus on rivers, inland lakes or the Great Lakes. They can protect habitat that is still intact or rehabilitate habitat that's degraded.

Applications will be accepted from Feb. 1 through March 15. Grants will be funded with revenue from an increase in hunting and fishing license fees.
