Driver killed after being struck by train

The Shiawassee County Sheriff responded to the report of a train striking the car.

Passengers on an Amtrak train heading for Flint were jolted but not hurt, when the train hit a motorist in rural Shiawassee County.

Vernon Township fire officials say the accident happened around 10 Monday night after the train passed through the Durand Rail station. The accident occurred on Byron Road between Garrison and Newburg.

Police say Diana Cannon, a 45-year-old woman from Lennon, was driving southbound on Byron Road. The driver, says police, ignored the lowered arms at the railroad crossing.

Her vehicle, a 2001 Chevy Cavalier, was then struck by the train.

Cannon was pronounced dead at the scene. Police believe alcohol was a factor.

A fire official says CN Railway is doing an investigation to determine exactly what happened.
