Eight fire departments including Clio, Mt. Morris, New Lothrop, and others responded to a large fire at a shop treating metal this evening.
The fire destroyed the Ultra-Dex Tooling Systems building on the 7000 block of Sheridan road near the Genesee and Shiawassee county line.
Fire officials expect crews to remain on scene well into the night due to a large shortage of water.
A concern for chemicals housed in the building prompted the evacuation of several homes to the north and northeast of the building.
"We've got chemicals inside right now and with the smoke pouring off we evacuated a few houses that way" Ronald Herzberg Assistant Fire Chief for Flushing told NBC25.
Herzberg also said the blaze started when a piece of metal being heat treated grew too hot and sparked the fire which quickly spread to the roof.
No injuries have been reported.
