BAY CITY, Mich. - Raising money and appetites for people young and old in Bay County as the literacy council of Bay City partnered up with the ‘Toni and Trish House’ to host the ‘Springtime Empty Bowls’ event.

To raise money local chefs competed for the title of "best soup-chef in Bay County" at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center.

Handmade ceramic and wooden bowls were also up for sale to help raise money.

"We like to help the community you know what I mean. We have some leftovers from events such as St. Patrick's Day parade and what not and we wanted to contribute,” said John Dion of Coonan's Irish Pub.

"What we do is all about caring. The literacy Council helps kids that are having trouble reading. They're helping people be productive adults those are both good organizations for this community,” said JoEllen Streeter of Toni and Trish House.

Proceeds from Wednesday's event are going to both free tutoring for early elementary aged children and special care for people suffering terminal illnesses.
