FAA: UPS jet crashes in Birmingham, Ala.

Birmingham Mayor William Bell tells NBC News that both the pilot and co-pilot have died in the crash.

A federal aviation official says a large UPS cargo plane has crashed near an airport in Birmingham, Ala.

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen tells The Associated Press that the A300 plane crashed on approach to the airport before dawn Wednesday.

NBC News is reporting that Birmingham Mayor William Bell says the only people on board were the pilot and co-pilot. There is no word on their conditions.

NBC News is also reporting that no one on the ground appears to be injured at this time.

The National Transportation Safety Board said they are launching a full Go-Team to investigate the crash.
