Family in dark 1 year after woman's death in Syria

Nicole Mansfield

Family members of a Michigan mother killed a year ago during fighting in Syria say they know little more now about her disappearance and death.

Thursday marks the one-year anniversary of 33-year-old Nicole Mansfield's death. The Flint-area family hasn't received her remains, a death certificate or solid information about why she was in the war-torn country.

Her father, Greg Mansfield, tells The Flint Journal it's been "absolutely horrible."

U.S. Rep. Dan Kildee says the State Department considers Nicole Mansfield's case an "ongoing investigation."

Relatives have said she married an Arab immigrant, divorced and traveled on other occasions to the Middle East. Mansfield told them she wanted to learn about Arab culture and politics.

She has an adult daughter from a previous relationship.
