February 2014 was coldest February since 1994

NOAA's National Climate Data Center has released their report on global land surface and ocean surface temperatures for the month of February. February 2014 ended up being the coldest February since 1994.

However, February 2014 ended up tying February 2001 for the 21st warmest February on record. So even though it was the coldest since 1994, it ended up in the top 25 for warmest Februaries on record. NOAA attributes part of this to the frigid land surface temperatures over North America and western Asia during the month. The February global departure from average ended up being 1.84ºF colder than the January 2014 departure from average! So if you thought January was cold, February ended up being even colder!
