Fire destroys apartment building in Flint

Fire destroyed a four-unit building at the Atherton East Apartments in Flint this morning.

Three of the units were occupied at the time of the fire.

A total of three people were taken to an area hospital. Two of the people jumped out of a second story window in order to escape. A third, a 12-year-old, has asthma and was taken to the hospital due to some smoke inhalation.

The winter weather made fighting the fire difficult, with Flint firefighters having to use a hydrant around the corner from the complex.

Additionally, power was shut off to adjacent buildings by Consumers Energy.

There is no word yet as to the cause. Arson investigators are on the scene looking into the cause of the fire.
