Flint councilman Mays posts bond after sentencing

Flint City Councilman Eric Mays posted bond and was released from custody following his sentencing in an impaired driving case.
A jury found Mays not guilty of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, marijuana possession and refusing to be fingerprinted. The jury replaced the operating a vehicle while intoxicated charge with driving while impaired and convicted him on that charge.
Mays was sentenced on Friday to 72 days in jail.
The Flint Journal reported Saturday he spent only a few hours behind bars before he posted bond.
Circuit Judge Joseph Farah granted Mays' request for an appeal bond after District Judge Nathaniel Perry sent Mays to jail and turned down his request to delay the sentence until after an appeal.
Mays says the jail sentence is excessive for a first-time offense.
