A $1.5 million gift is launching a fundraising campaign to boost a Flint-based food bank's capacities to distribute food, diversify offerings and train workers.

The Food Bank of Eastern Michigan announced Thursday the grant is part of a two-year, $2.5 million pledge from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation. The Flint-based philanthropy will give the remaining $1 million if the Food Bank raises $600,000 by the end of 2014.

The money is going toward turning a warehouse into what's called the Hunger Solution Center. Officials say it will double the organization's capacity to collect and distribute food and triple the annual delivery of fruits and vegetables.

The center will include a commercial kitchen for culinary arts training and adding menu items to meals delivered to agencies serving children.
