Students at Flint Northwestern High School are hoping their school wins the Smash Make a Musical contest. The school is one of 30 finalists for the competition, sponsored by NBC's musical drama series "Smash." Ten winners get a prize package to perform a musical in their home city. It also includes instruction from master theater teachers and rights to produce a show from MTIâ??s Broadway Junior Collection of musicals.
Students say winning the contest would give Flint youth something to be proud of.
"We're trying to show the kids that our school is not bad as they think it is, and we're trying to lose the violence, so we're trying to raise something better than just the violence and fighting,â?? said Freshman Lyrica Kelly.
