Flint River flotilla brings in crowds

The first ever Flint River flotilla near the "Chevy in the Hole" site.

More than 50 people took a ride down the Flint River Saturday to show residents the natural resource right in their backyard.

Canoes, kayaks, and inner tubes made their way from Grand Traverse Street through â??Chevy in the Holeâ?? and all the way to the Mott Park Golf Course.

The flotilla offered contests, like one for best floating device, and even a prize for the last place finisher.

"It is really surprising we got this many people the first year, we're really excited and hope every year it gets bigger and more fun. You see all these flotillas all over the state, Suttons Bay has the largest one, to have this many participants is pretty cool for Flint," said Janet Van De Winkle with the Flint River Corridor Alliance.

It was the first year for the event.

An after party followed the flotilla at the Mott Park Golf Course.
