Flint School Board approves layoffs, waits on decision to close alternative school

Flint school board listens to public comment at its June 4th board meeting.

The Flint School Board voted to layoff 256 members of its support staff but will wait on a proposal to close the Flint Northern alternative school building and relocate students.

Board members voted seven to one to approve the layoffs and say it will save the district five million dollars.

The pink slips are for secretary, maintenance, food services, and other support staff positions.

â??You're gonna pay another company to bring secretaries in who don't care. They're not gonna stay. They're not gonna take care of the children,â?? said Karen Grub, a secretary who is being laid off.

The superintendent says they have to make these tough decisions to address the district's 10 million dollar deficit and decisions like these are needed under the Deficit Elimination Plan.

The board is expected to talk about the closure of Flint Northern's alternative school and the creation of a seventh grade academy at the next board meeting.
