18-year-old Mark Jones was given 40 to 60 years in prison for the murder of 73-year-old Merlyne Wray.
Under a new Michigan law Jones could have received as much as life in prison without parole.
A jury found Jones guilty of murder back in November of 2013.
Jones was 14-year-old when Wray was murdered. Because of his age when the crime was committed, the judge is able to consider factors about Jones' childhood before the sentence was handed down.
When Jones was 16 he had escaped from a counseling center on Corunna Road. Police were able to recapture him a week later.
