The Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) has confirmed that former pastor and convicted murderer John White has committed suicide while in prison.

MDOC says that at about 4:30 this morning he was pronounced dead of what a preliminary investigation says is asphyxiation by suicide.

John White was sentenced to 85 years in prison after pleading guilty to the murder of 24-year-old Rebekah Gay on October 31, 2012.

White was the pastor at Christ Community Fellowship church in Deerfield Township.

Police said that White confessed to the crime, claiming that the bludgeoning and and strangulation of Gay was part of a sexual fantasy.

White then dumped her body in the woods. He then went to Gay's home and babysat her sleeping three-year-old son.

White was being held at the Michigan Reformatory in Ionia County.

There are no further details about White's death at this time.
