Free home for Flint wounded veteran

A nonprofit group that provides specially adapted homes for troops injured in combat is holding a groundbreaking ceremony for construction of a house in Brighton.

Homes for our Troops is building the house for Army Sgt. Nick Koulchar, a veteran of the war in Iraq. The public is invited to the ceremony, which begins Saturday at 11 a.m.

Koulchar lost both his legs above the knees when an explosive device penetrated the passenger side of the vehicle in which he was riding in Sadr City on Aug. 26, 2008.

The house will include features providing freedom of movement and the ability to live more independently.

The group's activities are funded with individual, foundation and corporate contributions. Veterans receive the houses for no charge.
