Freeland High School student dies at house party

A 16-year-old Freeland High School student died after being shot at a residence in the 9000 Block of North River Road in Tittabawassee Township.

Tittabawassee Township Police, Saginaw and Midland County Sheriff deputies responded to the home after getting 911 calls of a shooting at 2 a.m. Sunday.

According to a news release police found a 16-year-old Freeland High School student dead in the basement of a home.

Tittabawassee Township Police say the incident occurred following a bonfire at the victim's residence in which alcohol was believed to be a factor.

Police interviewed several Freeland High School students who were at the scene at the time of the shooting to determine if the shooting was intentional or accidental.

Saginaw County victim advocates and a counselor from Freeland High School were sent to the scene.

Freeland Superintendent Matt Cairy said Freeland High School will have support staff available for students throughout this time of grief.

The incident remains under investigation .

According to the news release, "The incident remains under investigation . Upon conclusion of the investigation the incident will be forwarded to the Saginaw County prosecutors office for review."

The name of the student has not yet been released.
