Galentine's Day event to help local women's shelter
FLINT, Mich. -- Many couples already getting a jump start and celebrating Valentine’s Day this weekend. However, some ladies chose to celebrate Galentine’s with their girlfriends instead.
One mid-Michigan woman is taking the idea of Galentine’s and using it to help local women in need.
Michele Pendleton was inspired by the 2017 Women’s March on Washington. While she marched at our nation's capitol, she met a lady who worked at a women’s shelter and was shocked to find out one of the least donated items were feminine hygiene products.
"I didn’t want to go on the march and not do something for my own community," says Pendleton. "I just felt it was important to bring that back here, the positive message and do what I could to help out everyone."
Pendleton has been collecting not just hygiene products but soap, shampoo, lotions, toothbrushes, and deodorant.
All these items will be donated to the YWCA of Great Flint which helps women and children in domestic violence situations get back on their feet.
"A lot of these items they get if they can afford it they try to but it really can hurt a woman’s self-esteem if she isn’t able to take care of herself," says Pendleton.
If you’d like to help, you can drop off donations this Sunday. The event runs from noon to 7 pm at the Flint Local 432 on First Street. While there, you can also make a Valentine’s Day card for the women at the YWCA.
