By now you've heard we need calcium for healthy bones and teeth. There's no doubt it's an essential nutrient. Remember your mom said "drink your milk". But local chiropractor and nutrition guru says you can get too much. He calls it "over calcification". Dr. Dan Kehres says many people, especially those over 60, need MORE calcium. But he's not too keen on milk.
During his weekly segment on NBC 25 Today, Dr. Dan says the prevalence of falling and breaking a hip/leg/wrist is common among seniors. Sometimes it's the result of weak bones, which can be caused by too little calcium.
So talk to your doctor about whether you need more or less calcium. If you need more, Dr. Dan says it's much better to get it through vegetables like broccoli. He says avoid processed foods like Triscuit's because they can actually rob your body of calcium.
Here's the recipe for a Protein Shake that's high in calcium and delicious:
- 1 cup spinach
- 1/3 cup frozen mango
- 1/4 cup frozen peaches
- 1/2 banana
- 1 scoop unflavored whey protein powder
- 1 tbsp. chia seeds
- 1/2 cup almond milk (or 1/4 cup canned coconut milk and 1/4 cup water)
