Girlfriend, niece charged with elder abuse after police find 52 pound man

Alice Bitters and Melissa Bardoni have been arraigned on felony abuse charges.

Genesee County Sheriff Robert Pickell is investigating what he is calling "one of the worst cases of elder abuse" he has seen in Flint.

According to Pickell, 67-year-old Albert Franklin was taken to the hospital back on July 14th, weighing just 52 pounds.

Upon his arrival at a local hospital, doctors discovered Franklin was in septic shock and called police.

After an almost two week long investigation, deputies arrested Franklin's caregivers- his girlfriend 61-year-old Alice Bitters, and her niece 36-year-old Melissa Bardoni.

The women were allegedly caring for the elderly man at his home. He was being fed through a feeding tube that had become infected, and he had nearly a dozen severe bed sores.

Both women have been arraigned on felony abuse charges and face up to 15 years in prison, if convicted.

Franklin is currently in the intensive care unit at a local hospital.

If he dies from his injuries, the women could face additional charges in his death.
