Hours-long standoff in Fenton ends peacefully

Man surrenders peacefully after hours-long standoff.

A standoff lasting hours Sunday ended peacefully in Fenton.

Michigan State Police, Fenton Police and the Genesee County Sheriff's Department surrounded a home located at the corner of Henry and Elizabeth for much of the afternoon and into Sunday evening.

They say a 44-year-old man barricaded himself inside the home.

The man eventually came out of the home around 8 p.m.

His mother says he suffers from mental illness.

"When they were doing all that moving around with their guns, I'm sure that he was freaking out. Cause he's a nice guy, he's just sick, he's mentally ill. He's had some stressful situations the last few days and so we could see it coming, we tried to get him to the doctor," said Diane Beckemeyer.

Diane said her son is being hospitalized.
