Hundreds of Saginaw students prepare to go to new schools

End-of-year goodbyes will signal a season of change for hundreds of Saginaw students forced to move schools come this fall.

Three schools will be shutting down after Tuesday, in a move similar to the one Flint schools approved this year to close a budget gap.

The school board approved the closures of Arthur Eddy Academy, Jerome Elementary and Longfellow Elementary schools in March to help balance a more than $32 million budget deficit.

K-5 students from Arthur Eddy will attend Heavenrich Elementary school this fall; students in 6th through 8th grade will move to Daniels Middle School. Jerome Elementary School will merge into Merrill Park Elementary, while Longfellow will merge into Houghton Elementary.

Superintendent Dr. Carlton Jenkins said earlier this year that the district has too many buildings for the roughly 7,600 students. The three closures will save the district nearly $4 million.
