Ice fisherman brave frigid temperatures out on bay
The recent cold snap is bringing ice fisherman out in droves.
Now bait shops near Saginaw Bay are filled with people ready to brave the cold temperatures.
You can see early risers already here at Frank’s Great Outdoors.
They opened up at 6 a.m.
It may still be cold, but that doesn't stop ice fisherman from setting up their shanties.
When temperatures drop there's one group who can't wait to get outside.
“We love it. It's a sick and twisted disease we can't shake. Self-included I love to ice fish,” Andy Gorske said.
Andy Gorske, a Manager at Frank's Great Outdoors has been ice fishing for as long as he can remember.
“It's the adventure on the way out on the way in catching fish not catching fish the stories we tell we lost one, one went through the hole either way it's just a blast all the way around,” he said.
The constant adventure gives Frank's a big boom in business. Meanwhile it brings back excitement every year for fisherman like Tracy Bourdon and his son Luke.
“We try to do an annual fish out here on the bay I've been doing it ever since I was a little kid want to give me son the chance to learn too,” Tracy said.
Andy has a couple safety reminders if you're planning to get out on the ice.
He says layer up, and make sure you have a shanty and heater.
He also says don't fish alone and make sure people know your emergency plan.
