Isabella Co. authorities respond to tanker spill

Several homes were evacuated in Isabella County Friday afternoon after a semi-tanker hauling gasoline overturned.

The Isabella County Sheriff's department says the accident happened around 1:30 p.m. at the intersection of Coe and Wise roads in Coe Township, about 10 miles southwest of Mt. Pleasant.

The tanker hauling about 13,000 gallons of gasoline overturned on its side when the driver tried to turn left onto Coe.

A small amount of gas leaked from the tank.

About seven homes nearby were evacuated as a precaution. Emergency crews from Great Lakes Petroleum helped local fire departments and the Isabella County hazmat team contain the spill.

No other vehicles were involved and no one was injured.

Officials say the 53-year-old driver from Alma turned too sharply and the weight of the gasoline caused the tanker to overturn. They say the driver was sober and wore his seatbelt.
