Isabella County farm owner released on bond in dead calves case

John Montrose is free on bond after being arraigned on cruelty to animal charges.

A 29-year-old central Michigan farmer has turned himself in to authorities after 71 calves were found dead beneath snow and hay on his property near Mount Pleasant.

John Montross has been released from custody after posting a $3,000 bond.

Montross of Deerfield Township was charged last week with abandoning and cruelty to animals.

The felony carries a maximum penalty of four years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

His next court date is Monday.
