Karegnondi Water Authority Pipeline construction underway

KWA Pipeline groundbreaking in St. Clair County.

Construction has begun on the Karegnondi Water Authority Pipeline in St. Clair County.

Genesee County Drain Commissioner Jeff Wright was joined by federal, state officials who have supported the project over the last several years.

Crews in Sanilac County's Worth Township have already started construction of the water intake pipe.

The intake portion will be tunneled under Lake Huron. The 65-mile pipeline is scheduled to be complete in September of 2014.

The KWA project will serve Flint and Lapeer as well as residents in Genesee, Lapeer and Sanilac counties.

In April, the City of Flint rejected an offer to keep getting water service from the City of Detroit.

We will have more on the project coming up on NBC25 News at 6.
