Lawrence sentenced to life in prison for killing Lay'la Jones

Lawrence was convicted on 15 counts in the shooting death of Lay'la Jones.

A Saginaw County judge has sentenced a 24-year-old man to life in prison without parole in the fatal drive-by shooting of a 6-year-old girl during a revenge attack on a man.

Lay'la Jones was killed Aug. 29, 2012, in Saginaw. Authorities say Michael Lawrence and 22-year-old Rico Saldana were targeting a third man for an earlier killing.

A circuit court jury on Jan. 22 convicted both men of first-degree murder.

Before Judge Darnell Jackson sentenced Lawrence, the convict apologized to Lay'la's mother but denied killing her. Jackson gave Saldana the same sentence Feb. 20.

Lawrence also awaits a murder trial in the April 15, 2013, killing of 23-year-old Angelica Olivarez. She was mother of Lawrence's 3-year-old son Michael Lawrence III, who was wandering the streets when police discovered her body.
