Long-time Burton Fire Chief has passed away

Burton Fire Chief Doug Halstead

Burton Fire Chief Doug Halstead has passed away after battling with a terminal illness.

The Mayor of Burton, Paul Zelenko, has ordered flags to be flown at half-mast.

"Doug has always been a very gracious man and that did not changes he took charge in preparing everyone else for his death," said Mayor Zelenko. "Doug loved the citizens of this city, always worked tirelessly toward the good of humanity, and had a true passion for ensuring that his fire department would be the best at not only fighting fire, but serving the community."

Mayor Zelenko also said that Chief Halstead met with her every day over the last few weeks to help ensure a smooth transition.

Chief Halstead died at home, surrounded by his family. Mayor Zelenko tells NBC25 that he received a police and fire escort from his home to Allen Funeral Home in Davison.

Chief Halstead had been with the Burton Fire Department since October of 1996.

Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
