Man accused of stealing hundreds of batteries from semi trucks

John A. Jerrolds

A man with a history of breaking into vehicles is behind bars again. Police say 53-year-old John A. Jerrolds of Burton stole more than 250 batteries from parked semi trucks in Saginaw County, mostly from the Buena Vista area.

Jerrolds was arraigned Thursday in Saginaw County district court. A not-guilty plea was entered on his behalf.

Truck drivers in Birch Run tell NBC25, they've also heard of such thefts. Batteries on most semi trucks are easily accessible, right behind the cabs. Some trucks can have up to eight batteries each.

An employee at the Conlee travel center in Birch Run said, sometimes, thieves make off with more than just batteries.

â??They're telling us Flint, Detroit, are getting robbed. FedEx trucks, 18-wheelers, all that, getting robbed, taking their batteries, taking everything,â?? Justin Rogers said.

Buena Vista police say when they pulled Jerrolds over Dec. 9, they found saw bolt cutters and other tools in the bed of his pickup truck.

Jerrolds is being held on $30,000 bond.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 28.

State records show Jerrolds was sentenced in 2001 for two counts of breaking and entering a vehicle.
