Man being charged with assault, sex offense briefly escapes prisoner transport van

A man being transported to the Midland County Jail briefly escaped from the transport van today while being taken from Isabella County.

The Midland County Sheriff says a 35-year-old man from Midland was able to bypass a locking mechanism. When the transport van stopped at the intersection of US-10 and Bay City Road, he escaped out of the back of the vehicle and ran north.

A 25-year-old Midland man at work received a text message from a relative about the escape. The 25-year-old jumped into his truck and started to drive around the area, searching for the escaped suspect.

The 25-year-old man spotted the suspect, who was still handcuffed, hiding by the US-10 overpass. He approached the suspect and told him to "get on the ground" and that the police were on their way.

The suspect then got up and started to run again.

Officer Jay Poellet of the Midland City Police Department spotted the 25-year-old man waving for him. Officer Poellett then took up the chase of the suspect and successfully re-captured him.

In total, the suspect was only out of police custody for 15 minutes.

The suspect was being taken to Midland County to face charges of felonious assault and failure to register as a sex offender.
