Man dead after being shot by a Flint Township police officer

Police say the man tried to drive off in this white Impala and was using the vehicle as a weapon.

A man is dead after being shot by a Flint Township police officer.

The department says an officer pulled over a car on Flushing Road near Eldorado Drive at around 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday. After a second officer arrived to assist with the traffic stop, one of the passengers in the vehicle got back inside the car and tried to drive off.

Flint Township Police say the second officer fired two shots as the vehicle.

"A vehicle can be used as a weapon. It's got a whole lot more mass than a speeding bullet does,â?? said Lt. Jim Baldwin with the Flint Township Police Department.

Witnesses say the vehicle did a U-turn after the bullets hit and ended up on the other side of the road.

Police say the man was taken to the hospital where he died of his injuries.

Three other people where in the car during the original traffic stop. A second man, a woman, and a toddler but they had already gotten out of the vehicle during the traffic stop and were not injured.

Police are releasing few details about what led up to the shooting.

The two officers will be on paid administrative leave, which the department says is typical in these situations.

The Michigan State Police took over the investigation at the request of the Flint Township Police department and will look into whether it was justified for the officer to fire.
