Michigan police end investigation of fatal mauling

Police have completed an investigation after two dogs fatally mauled a 46-year-old jogger on a rural Michigan road.

Metamora Township Police Chief David Mallett tells The Flint Journal the initial report is done and has been sent to the Lapeer County prosecutor's office. He declined on Wednesday to comment on investigators' findings.

Authorities will decide whether the dogs' owners will face criminal charges. The Detroit Free Press reports that federal authorities say the owners, who are from Albania, were living in the U.S. illegally and facing deportation at the time of the mauling.

Craig Sytsma was attacked July 23 in Metamora Township, about 45 miles northwest of Detroit.

A hearing is scheduled for Friday on whether the two cane corsos in the attack and other dogs can be destroyed.
